VA Research Finds Opioids Fall Short as Pain Treatment

Research conducted at Veterans Affairs clinics found that opioids are not the best option for managing chronic pain.
Conducted at clinics in Minnesota, participants with chronic back, hip or knee pain were put into 2 groups over 12-months to determine the best treatment option.
One group was prescribed opioids for treatment, while the other was prescribed alternatives.
Researchers monitored pain for over 240 patients at 62 clinics with moderate to severe chronic pain.
Their study found that those who were prescribed opioids still experienced pain that interfered with walking, working, and sleeping, while suffering additional adverse symptoms related to opioid medication.
